Dream Bruises and Other Bleedthroughs

What if in your dream you went to heaven and there plucked a strange and beautiful flower and what if when you awoke you had that flower in your hand?

Coleridge's famous question is not a hypothetical to active and conscious dreamers, who notice various types of bleedthrough between different dimensions of reality and experience.
A nurse who took part in one of my early dream classes later told me she had dreamed of a visitation from a being that was half woman, half deer. Waking in her second floor apartment, she found deer scat on her floor. Trying to make sense of this (nurses are no-nonsense, practical people) she recognized that a deer might have wandered onto the grounds of her apartment complex. But she was quite certain there was no way it could have gotten up her stairs or through her window! She was content to accept the unlikely deer poop as a sign from the deeper universe that her visitation had been absolutely for real. She later found the deer-woman turning up as a guide when she was caring for patients, especially the dying who needed help to prepare for their journeys beyond this world.
In his account of his personal dreams in The Crystal and the Way of Light, Dzogchen master Nakhai Norbu gives a memoriable example of something being transferred from a dream into the hand of the dramer.
One of his uncles was renowned as a tertön, a "treasure revealer" of hidden texts that sometimes appeared as tiny scrolls in unusual places, apparently transmitted across generations by ancient masters. While staying with his uncle in a remote area, Namkhai Nprbu dreamed he was visited by a dakini.
She gave him a small scroll of paper containing a sacred text. She said this was very important and that on waking he should give it to his uncle. In the dream he knew he was dreaming. He gripped the scroll tightly in one fist and wrapped the other around it. It was not permitted to disturb his uncle until after his morning rituals, so he drifted off still with his fists clamped together. Waking at dawn, he opened his hand and found there really was tiny scroll within it. He was too excited to wait. He woke up his uncle and presented the scroll. His uncle took it and said “Thank you, I expecting this” as if nothing had happened.
On a land of marvels and siddhis, a report of this kind would have drawn respect and keen interest rather than incredulity.
One of the most common bleedthroughs from the realm of dream or astral experience into the world of the body is astral repercussion, to use a term favored by Dion Fortune and her peers. This is what happens when what is experienced in the astral body during its excursions outside the physical body leave physical marks when it returns.
While Fortune described cases where this kind of thing can be seriously depleting, even life-threatening, to the experiencer, astral repercussion may be a routine side effect of getting out and about in a subtle energy body, sometimes wholly benign and even entertaining. In the first letter from Lady Valerie D'Arcy in my novel Fire Along the Sky, she protests that an amorous visit from her lover in the form of a leopard-man left her with bite marks on her body; this fictional scene was drawn from experience!
Let me give an example from my dream life a few summers ago. I was enjoying a rather lazy week's vacation on a lake, swimming and reading a lot, spending a lot more time in bed overnight than is my typical pattern. My body's peace and ease over those summer days was balanced by the nocturnal adventures of my dream self. In a dream thriller that could easily be filmed in the style of The Bourne Identity, I went on a wild ride through the Bois de Boulogne in Paris. We have to dodge road-blocks and predatory packs that are out to stop cars and rob their drivers and passengers, or worse. The predators use all sorts of stratagems to get drivers to stop, sometimes pushing children in front of the cars. When they do that to us, I grab control of the steering wheel from my driver, managing to avoid hitting a child being used as bait, so we escape the trap. I hurt my arm making this maneuver, but pay little attention because soon I am caught up in a big-stakes international intrigue.
I wake happy and excited. I felt like I had stepped into a movie to play an Action Man hero, and this was really enjoyable. But - uh, oh - how did that bruise come to appear on the underside of my left upper arm? There really was no physical cause I could locate. On the other hand, there was all that action in the dream, and the pain I experienced during the car chase. Someone had jabbed something at me through the window of the car, in that mad ride through the Bois de Boulogne.
Inter-dimensional bleedthroughs bring us awake to the fact that we are engaged in more than one order of reality, and that what happens beyond our default (physical) reality may not only be no less real, but sometimes more so. If the dream gave me the bruise, then which was more real: my night escapade in Paris, or my lazy day by a lake in Vermont?
We are also drawn to reflect on our lager anatomy. We have more than one vehicle of consciousness. Beyond the physical body, we have an etheric, or dense energy, vehicle, and an astral body in which we travel in dreams, and higher vehicles given different names in different tarditiosn. When we go dreaming, we often travel beyind the physical body and we rarely go as a disembodied thought form. We travel in the astral body, sometmes carrying a significant amount of denser etheric energy. Take too much with you, and you return depleted - and you are vulnerable to  significant etheric reopercussion on your physical body.
In modern Western society, we are not told much about the subtle body, but understanding its reality and its requitrements is essential to or psychic wellbeing and to safe and rewarding adventures beyond the physical.

A month of postcards from my dream travels

One of the great gifts of dreaming, especially welcome in these shut-down times, is that we can travel without leaving home and be as social as we please. My daily and nightly practice is to type what I recall from dreams and hypnagogia on my phone as soon as I come back from an excursion. I then email myself my reports. When I get out of bed I often make a quick sketch, a postcard from a dream adventure. Then I write up a full report in my journal.

I am going to offer a selection of postcards from my dream travels over the past month, with brief reports. My feelings around most of these dreams can be described as: just-so, been there, done that. Most of these experiences feel entirely real, playing out in another order of reality that I don't consider any less real than the physical world and sometimes feels more so.

I am posting the dreams in reverse chronological order, from the most recent to the earliest. This is how dreams tend to return to us. We stir with the final scene in our mind and then sometimes manage to scroll back and retrieve what went on before.

Dream
Arriving at an Airport in Morocco
My friend drives me to the terminal and then drops me at a parking space a long way beyond it. I'm confused since we have not confirmed that flights are taking off and there is no sign of the people who were going to accompany us to an ancient site. I decide to take a shortcut back to the terminal by climbing a hill. I am surprised to find myself walking round the blue dome of a mosque. I am careful not to touch it. I come down to the terminal without incident. There are few people there but some souvenir shops are open along the concourse.
Feelings: just-so, been there, done that.

Reality: My friend was true to character. In an earlier scene, curiously, she had a baby who was just starting to walk, which does not correspond to any current or future situation in ordinary life. I haven't been to Morocco in physical reality but many years ago I was privileged to receive instruction and initiation over several nights of hyper-lucid dreaming with an order of priestesses based in Fez. It was much warmer and dryer in my dream than in the frozen Northeast in advance of a forecast snowstorm but very dusty and sand-blown.

Green Train Off the Mountain
"Get on board!" he urges me as soon as I close my eyes. He is calling from the engine of a green train. He has the quality of Gandalf or Dumbledore. I like him and I have always loved trains. The moment I join him we are on a spectacular spiral ride up a mountain. Then the train leaves the tracks and we fly over a deep blue sea to realms of magic and mystery. A black dog is with me. Yes, I'll be happy to do this again.

How You Know You’re Not in Kansas Any More: The TP Test
After my encounter with a Norse sorcerer in the hypnagogic state last night, I wasn't altogether surprised to find a shift in my environment. I felt very light - not weak, but maybe flimsy - in relation to things around me that seemed to have gained great weight and density. I decided to test conditions by tearing toilet paper off a roll. It simply would not tear off, even when I used both hands and then my teeth. Teflon tp! Fortunately I did not need the tp for its usual function.
When I came out of the dream, I reflected that a change in apparent scale or proportion is often a sign that you have left ordinary reality - or it has left you - in the old wonder tales. In the voyage of Maelduin, in the Celtic imramma, the travelers know they are not in Ireland any more when they come to an island where the ants are the size of calves.

Dream
Great Turtle Rises
I am with a group in a rural location. We agree to enter the healing night together and bed down in a room full of mattresses. An elderly man moves among some of the dormant bodies with sprigs of wildflowers with lilac blossoms. I see that whatever he is doing brings immediate healing.
A woman elder is lying near me next to the wall and I notice there is a strong energy connection between us. I can feel juice streaming back and forth, balanced and powerful. I look at the wall. It is now natural stone, maybe limestone, with the clearly defined shape of a turtle. The stone turtle starts to revolve. It comes alive. Turtle raises its head and stares at me.
"Aksotha," I greet it in Mohawk, with reverence. "Grandmother."
Feelings: blessed

Street Players Outside the Conference
I am moderating an important conference about how to return to civility and decency in public life. Delegates come from all across the spectrum but are so far behaving well, accepting the seating plan and the agenda. I step outside for a break and see troupes of costumed players. Some people thought the conference should be light entertainment. I watch a group in white pantomime French sailor outfits. They start crooning "Roaming in the Gloaming".
Feelings: sober and amused at the same time
The conference and my work there were demanding yet satisfying and felt like a completely real experience in another reality. When I stepped out the door I may have entered another dream and another world. Some light entertainment was refreshing!
I love the gifts of spontaneous sleep dreams, like this one, that take me to places I never expected.

Baldieri's Football
I am moving along a broad avenue that feels like a processional way. On either side are groups of royals and nobles who remind me of the courts of the tarot. They are waving me on towards what looks like a medieval city. It is floating in the sky, maybe fifty feet up. Tethered to the Earth by just a simple pinkish cord that looks like wool.
The nobles bow and wave me forward. I see that immense crowds are gathered, for the send-off for a man who was a public idol. The city is no longer visible. Instead I see a shiny-dark house-sized ovoid, also tethered to the ground by the pink string. A hatch opens and I see a well-furnished interior, leather upholstery, wooden panels. This is for deceased hero. His name is Antonio Baldieri.
Maybe he was a football star, like the recently departed Argentine player. But his craft is not shaped like a soccer ball. It’s like the balls used in American football or rugby.
Feelings: very curious
Reality: I don't know an Antonio Baldieri and Auntie Google gave me no interesting matches. I have observed that ovoid is a popular shape for interdimensional travel. I describe a group shamanic journey in an ovoid vessel to the intelligences of another star system in my book Dreamgates. Some dreamers who have made journeys to meet loved ones on the Other Side have found them living for a time in football-shaped mini-worlds.

They Go Through the Doggy Door

I am with a slim younger woman and her little son in the UK.. They want to get butties from a cafe. To dodge the line they go through the flap of the doggy door. There is no way I can get through that. I walk round to the front of the shop and see them at the head of the line, choosing their sandwiches

Feelings: amused

Context: this is one scene from a dream excursion in which I spent at least two days in the UK in one hour of clock time back here. Getting Brits in workshops accustomed to how I use shamanic drumming was a major theme so I am carrying my drum in the sketch. If you don't know what a butty is you don't know much about popular English culture

Pigeon Shooting at the Palais Royal: From the Other Side to Another Time
I am with a dear friend who passed years ago. We sit on a warm sandstone boulder overlooking the sea. I start talking about what was right and wrong in our relationship and then- WHOOSH - we are transported to another scene. We are in the gardens of the Palais Royal in Paris circa 1700. I am dressed in the gentleman's clothing of the time complete with tricornne hat. I am with a group of aristos who are shooting at pigeons. I am handed a flintlock pistol, primed and charged, and in this body I know what to do with it.
Feelings: excited, intrigued
Reality: I don't have a linear view of reincarnation but my experience has shown me that our present lives are related to the dramas of other personalities in other times, who are part of our multidimensional families. I am quite familiar with another 18th century personality; I had to write two historical novels to do justice to his life and also set necessary distance between us. I have been given another assignment in far memory and parallel lives.

Hanuman Productions
I return from a dream in which I feel I am playing the role of a different person. I ask, What kind of dream was that? Immediately I see the logo of a film company. It shows Hanuman flying through the air brandishing a movie director's bull horn. I have long had the impression that some dreams are produced by film companies behind the curtain of the world but this is the first time Hanuman Productions has been identified as one of the studios.

Getting On the Number 2 Bus
I am waiting with two women organizers I like to go on a bus to a campaign event in the beach suburbs of Sydney, Australia. The bus that turns up is unusual. It is bright yellow but not a school bus. It is very clearly a number 2. There is something at the back that looks like a big cement mixer, maybe some new form of propulsion. When the doors open I see the interior is also unusual. There is something like a little picket fence around some of the benches, and lots of animals with their people. Someone cautions me, "Don't let the dogs out."

Feelings: I really enjoyed the sequence of which this scene is a part and stayed with it for a long time after waking.

Context: I seemed to be monitoring a political contest. Everything was so civilized compared to the state of play in the United States. The woman candidate my companions were supporting was offering creative and nurturing remedies. I was glad to be going back to the beach suburbs of Sydney.

Lion Man Rising In the City of Cats
In the City of Cats, lions are on guard on the ground floor of a vast palace complex. I check back from time to time to make sure they are still on the alert, and am satisfied they will not allow any intruder to pass. My main focus is on the lion man who is slowly reviving inside an open casket. He was very white when I first looked in, but now he is coming back and his eyes are open. This is wonderful. We need him now.
Feelings: Excited, almost exultant.
Reality: Yes

Postscript from Café Jet-Lag

As I said, what I offer here is just a series of postcards from dream excursions over the past few weeks. The full reports are much more detailed and complex. Then there are all the dream travels I did not turn into sketches: for example, all the workshops and trainings I find myself leading in dreams almost every night at widely scattered locations all over the maps of more than one world

I must admit that there can be a penalty for traveling far and wide in your dream body. Here is a note about that I recorded on November 25, 2020, only part of which is conveyed in my sketch of the "Doggy Door":

In dreams we generally travel in a subtle energy body that can suffer wear and tear that we feel when it rejoins our physical vehicle.
I am in recovery from at least two days of intensive travel in the UK (during one hour of tick tock time before 6:15 this morning). I led a workshop where there were issues because some people didn't understand that they were not supposed to talk during my shamanic drumming sessions. I harvested an advisory about the need to take care in setting ground rules for some coming online workshops hosted in the UK.
However for the most part my dream excursion - including my stay in a flat near Eton College, my search for that number on a High Street, my visit with that mother and son to a food shop they entered through the flap of a large dog door - feels like a just-so experience in another reality. Rather tiring this time but hey, I did not have to navigate covid restrictions or wait for my luggage at an airport baggage claim.
Did anyone say "etheric (or astral) repercussion"? That's the old name for what happens when you have an experience on the astral plane that leaves marks on your physical body. Good thing that man who was rearranging seating for an outdoor gathering in the same dream sequence narrowly missed my left eye with the metal leg of a chair that he swung carelessly over my head. He meant no harm but I might have surfaced with quite a shiner today.

Our days are full of dream residue

We often wake with a dream hangover, even if we don't recall the dreams that caused it. Freud said that dreams are full of "day residue", thoughts and memories left over from waking life. It is no less true that our days are full of dream residue.
Sometimes we become aware of this when we wake up feeling jet-lagged or even as if we have been run over by a truck, even though we seemed to sleep well enough. This is often the effect of what esoteric writers used to call "astral repercussion". You get out and about in an energy body, in night dreams, and what happens to that astral vehicle may reverberate in your physical system. In extreme cases, like those Dion Fortune made the stuff of the highly illuminating and sometimes cautionary tales in her Secrets of Doctor Taverner, bruises or apparent wounds may be left on the physical body.
Those jetlag sensations may be caused by a lot of dream travel;  if you are flying across the world in a dream body, especially if you are crossing large bodies of water (which drain energy from the subtle body) you may have quite literal reasons to feel the way you would feel after a long flight on a plane. Frequent fliers need to learn more about the nature and care and maintenance of energy bodies, which is a major theme in my book Dreamgates.
Our dream activity, remembered or not, often sets the tone for the day. Sometimes we rise with a terrific surge of energy and confidence or a clear sense of direction that was lacking the day before. We may say that we slept well; chances are we also dreamed well.
The "vigilance" theory developed by Finnish dream researcher Antti Revonsuo maintains that in dreams the brain rehearses for patterns of challenge and opportunity that lie ahead, preparing us to move faster and more effectively when certain situations arise, and that this activity is important and useful whether or not we remember our dreams.
Deja vu is one of the most striking examples of dream residue, though many of us fail to understand how it comes about. We meet a person or enter a scene that is absolutely familiar to us; we are sure we have seen this before. Most often this is because we are now catching up, in waking life, with an event that first took place in a dream.
Sometimes dream residue is so outrageous and in our face that we can't fail to see it. In my book Conscious Dreaming I report an episode shared with me by a nurse who dreamed she received a visitation from a guide who appeared as half-woman, half-deer. In the morning, she was amazed to find deer scat on the rug in her second-floor apartment. It seemed impossible that it could be there - unless it spilled from the dream.
We might recall Coleridge's famous questions:

What if you slept? And what if, in your sleep, you dreamed? And what if, in your dream, you went to heaven and there plucked a strange and beautiful flower? And what if, when you awoke, you had the flower in your hand? Ah, what then?

Then we would know that the dream experiences are real, and that what goes on in the dream world doesn't necessarily stay in the dream world. It happens.

Dream bruises, dream love-bites and other cases of astral repercussion

What if in your dream you went to heaven and there plucked a strange and beautiful flower and what if when you awoke you had that flower in your hand?

Coleridge's famous question is not a hypothetical to active and conscious dreamers, who notice various types of bleedthrough between different dimensions of reality and experience.

In the first letter from Lady Valerie D'Arcy in my novel Fire Along the Sky, she protests that an amorous visit from her lover in the form of a leopard-man left her with bite marks on her body; this fictional scene was drawn from experience!
Let me give an example from my dream life during a lazy week of summer vacation on Lake Champlain. I spent my time swimming and reading, dining well, spending a lot more time in bed overnight than is my typical pattern. My body's peace and ease over those summer days was balanced by the nocturnal adventures of my dream self.

If the dream gave me the bruise, then which was more real: my night escapade in Paris, or my lazy day by a lake in Vermont?

Dearest Shane,

I dream you as the leopard. Last night you came to me in his skin. You frightened me, pressing against my face. I knew you by the eyes.
This night vision was entirely real. As I write this, I feel the places in my body you praised and fed.
I cannot undress in front of Sir Henry tonight, even if he begs me to do it, because I have bite marks and a spectacular bruise, ovoid and empurpled as an eggplant, blooms on my inner thigh.
Can you cause a leopard, Shane?

- love letter from Lady Valeie D'Arcy to Shane Hardacre, the opening page of my novel Fire Along the Sky published by Excelsior Editions. Please note that only the second edition contains the letters.

Tracking the Dream Traveler

Most days I spend time tracking the Traveler, trying to figure out where he went this time, in what my waking mind says was a dream. Was he scouting the possible future again? Or having adventures in a parallel world or a past life situation? Or visiting the dead in their current habitats?
Tracking my traveling self is like trying to follow a series of subtle marks left on a forest trail – a broken blade of grass, a scratch in the bark of a tree, animal spoor that is not quite right.
But Robert the Traveler is not all that woodsy. He likes the play of words, often in languages I don’t understand. Then I am required to become a word detective and amateur linguist in my efforts to follow the traces he leaves in my groggy brain as it stirs awake, sometimes after the thump of a bumpy landing.
My efforts to track the Traveler are complicated by the fact that when he is on the road, I sometimes forget that we are not one and the same. He is never bound to the body and brain in the world where I am writing this. He uses different bodies, and I have learned that some of these are quite vulnerable to the physics of other worlds, so he is not simply a thought form or a creature of air.
What he goes through in his adventures sometimes leaves marks on my body, an effect that used to be called astral repercussion. When he flies across oceans or between worlds, I sometimes come back feeling more jet-lagged than I ever do after conventional air travel.
I continue to learn about this. In some of our excursions, I slip in and out of his perspective, joining in the action and then stepping back to assess the situation as an observer. This happens a lot. When it does, I don't waste time or blur focus by shouting to myself, "This is a dream!" or "I'm having a lucid dream!". I simply know that I have managed to achieve dual or multiple consciousness in the midst of an adventure in another reality. When I write this up in my journal, Robert the Recorder may tag it as a dream. But for Robert the Traveler the experience is entirely real, and what matters is making the right choices - with full consciousness that you have choice - whatever world you happen to be in.
Last night Robert the Traveler was in Brazil, talking to the dead and negotiating the price of a bundle of long, slightly greenish cigars. That's just a trip to the corner store for him. Last month he traveled to Ufa in 1943 and sat down with Stalin. In November, he traveled to Mongolia, jumping between two different times other than my own, seeking to foil a Nazi plot to locate and appropriate the spirit banner of Genghis Khan.

I wonder how Robert the Traveler looks at Robert the Writer, who has been holed up reading and scribbling for a few weeks of a bitterly cold Northern winter. Oh dear. I fear that some days the Traveler may look at me the way that Indiana Jones would look at a couch potato.
